The Puerto Rico vs. Mexico Rivalry: Championship Fights

One of the best rivalries in sports involves the small island of Puerto Rico of just 9,104 km2 (3,515 Sq. mi) and with a population of less than 4 million vs. the nation of Mexico of an area 1,972,550 km2 (15th in the world) with the 11th largest population in the world with 100 million and countless over 30 Million Mexican-Americans living in the United States.  This rivalry was basically nonexistent until the 1970’s until the arrival of Esteban De Jesus, Alfredo Escalera, and Wilfredo Gomez who defeated a total of 17 Mexican boxers, and only suffered one defeat at the hands of Salvador Sanchez by TKO in 1981.  However, there had been other bouts between Puerto Rican boxers versus Mexican boxers prior to the 1970’s. The first important championship bout was between Sixto Escobar and Baby Cassanova in Montreal, Canada, on June 26, 1934 when Sixto knockouts Casanova in the 9th round to become the first Puerto Rican world champion. The second major bout between a Puerto Rican vs. Mexican was between Carlos Ortiz vs. Raymundo “Battling “Torres in California for the World Lightweight title in 1960. Ortiz wins by knocking out Torres in the 10th round.

It has been an interesting rivalry with two fan bases that have kept boxing alive in the United States, as a result, it has been exploited by boxing promoters, networks, and this has brought many times the worst of so called fans in boxing threads and forums due to its nationalistic pride on both sides which have led to racism, hate, and in minor occurrences violence.  Many believe it should not even be a rivalry due to the countless boxers which the nation of Mexico produces due to its large population. A true rivalry would be the United States 3rd in the worlds in population with 312,126,000 million vs. Mexico 11th in the worlds in population with 112,336,538 million, or Japan 10th in the worlds in population with 127,950,000 million vs. Mexico.

The created myth has been that the Mexican boxers have dominated the Puerto Rican boxers, but that is not the reality in world championship bouts to the surprise of many Puerto Rico is beating Mexican and Mexican-American boxers in world championship bouts sanctioned by the WBC, WBO, IBF, WBA, and World Titles before the 1960’s.

Fans will always find excuses or claim one is better than the other based on facts of individual boxers’ accomplishments, that the important fights one side won, as if championship fights are not important, or they will argue about how many champions they currently have, or that they have won in divisions, which is all based on subjectivity and not objective reality based on facts and stats. Both Puerto Rican and Mexican boxers have produced greats in the sport of boxing, be that as it may, the boxers of the small island of Puerto Rico have fought the best Mexican and Mexican-American boxers since 1936 in World Title Bouts to the present and have historically dominated.
